I was chatting to a friend recently who works in the restaurant industry. He said something that really stuck with me.
He said he gave his restaurant a simple interior refurb – fresh lighting, new chairs, a coat of paint. He told me this doubled their revenue. Not because it brought in a flood of new diners overnight, but because it made the staff feel better, the managers more energised, and that in turn transformed the service.
“Everyone showed up with a different energy,” he said. “And the customers felt it.”
That idea hit home, because the same approach could transform asset management firms, particularly across marketing, sales and content teams.
The Problem Behind the Polished Façade
Most asset managers are rightly risk adverse. And while their teams are large and capable, they often operate in silos. The Sales team have their targets. Marketing are focused elsewhere. The Content team are somewhere in between. They’re all working hard, but not necessarily working together.
The result? A lot of effort, a lot of output, but not always a lot of impact.
Just like a tired restaurant that serves decent food, but doesn’t make you want to return, the experience is off. The cohesion, the pride, the clarity of purpose, it’s not quite there.
A Tailored Approach Can Turn the Tables
That’s where focused, buying-situation-based marketing comes in, and where asset managers can learn from hospitality.
When a restaurant wants to turn performance around, they don’t launch a national ad campaign. They tighten the menu. They re-brief the team. They brighten the lights and polish the cutlery. They focus, and it works.
Likewise, asset managers don’t need sprawling awareness campaigns to make meaningful gains. What they need is tightly targeted, account-based marketing that aligns marketing, sales, and content around:
• Where the revenue is today
• Where the growth is tomorrow
• What we’re actually solving for right now
Work to Be Proud Of, That Works
When teams are united around a shared vision, everything changes:
• Content gets sharper, because it knows who it's speaking to
• Sales become more confident, because they’re backed by relevance
• Marketing is more strategic, because it’s leading with commercial purpose, not just delivery
And just like that refurbished restaurant, the whole organisation shows up differently.
It’s not about more campaigns. It’s about the right campaign, with the right team, at the right time, built on a clear understanding of the buying group and what matters to them.
Marketing Should Hold It All Together
Just like a restaurant manager ensures the kitchen, front of house, and customer experience are all working in harmony, marketing should be the glue in asset management. The function that aligns effort to impact. Great marketing understands the commercial objective, and brings it to life through creative and strategic execution. It supports sales and inspires the whole team.
The problem isn’t lack of effort. It’s lack of shared focus.
It’s Time to Raise the Lights
The next time you're in a restaurant that just feels better, notice what’s happening around you. A tighter menu. A clearer pitch. A team that’s proud of what they’re serving. That same transformation is possible inside every asset manager’s marketing function. It just takes alignment, intent, and the will to focus on what really matters.
We’re helping our asset management clients do exactly that. We offer tightly focused marketing and sales programmes built around real buying situations and commercial priorities.
If you're ready to feel more like the refurbished restaurant, with proud teams, clearer goals, and work that actually works, let's talk.
