The Veterans War

When the UK left active conflict, public support for veterans quietly faded. But for thousands of men and women who served, the battle never ended. 1 in 3 veterans have felt suicidal. Their struggle is hidden. Their needs are long-term. And they’re being forgotten. Arthur helped Help for Heroes bring that truth back into the spotlight with a bold campaign that refused to let veterans disappear from public consciousness.

Our strategy was simple: publicise the fight veterans still face long after the headlines stop. No sentimentality. No clichés. Just the stark reality of the injuries, trauma and isolation. And crucially, we gave the public a clear role: Donate to provide life-changing support to UK veterans and their families – and make sure their sacrifices are never forgotten. ‘The Veterans War’ campaign centred around a copy-led platform that dramatised the unseen battles happening every day in the minds and bodies of veterans across the UK. Rooted in Help for Heroes’ brand identity and assertive in tone, it deliberately avoided the familiar tropes of sad, silhouetted soldiers. The campaign rolled out across print, digital, OOH and bus backs, with national fundraising activity supported by targeted regional awareness bursts. Fundraising performance was measurably higher in the regions where awareness activity was running, proving that when you put an issue back in view, support follows.
